De Sadede Sade was perhaps a quitessential 18th C figure. He thought our actions and feelings arose from our nature, which was simply a given. Thus he is a determinist, and one who like Rousseau took the notion of human nature as central. He also thinks that action is prompted by feeling. Diderot presents acting as presenting the appearance of experiencing the feelings which have prompted actions (in important historical figures?) This is different - isn't it ? - from the belief-desire model for explaining action, and from anything neurophysiologically aware (20th C).
