Seminar discussion: Sexuality

Leanne has prepared the following notes:

To begin our discussion, we first tried to think of possible legislation which we thought should be applied to this area. Here are some of the basic points we thought should be legislated:

• An Age Of Consent

• Not performing sexual acts in places which could cause offence

• Any sexual act must always have the consent of everyone involved

(No-one came up with legislation for performing sex acts on your own, providing they caused no harm to anyone else.)

Next, we delved a little deeper into certain areas and tried to establish what was wrong with certain things:

• Age of Consent

Is 16 yrs a suitable age?
Should we lower it, as in other European countries, or raise it?
Teenage pregnancy rates show that the age of consent does not have much impact anyway.
Does this imply that we need stronger laws/ punishments? Would higher penalties deter people?
Under-age parents are not good role models for their children. You need to be able to provide emotionally and financially.
This lack of morals may be passed on to future generations.
Is it just the risk of pregnancy that makes under age sex wrong?
If a technique was introduced that eliminates the chance of pregnancy, would it then be ok?
What other factors make it wrong? Regretted encounters? Inappropriate? Would allow sex with minors – possible loop hole for paedophiles? Loss of innocence?
What is innocence? Being naive? Unadulterated by adult concepts? Not having the understanding to desire sex for what it really is?
Is it fair to base on age? Is maturity not a better scale? How could it be put into place?
Can physically ready but not psychologically ready?

• Child Pornography

Exploitation and invasion of privacy
Child has no understanding of implications
Child gives no consent, or does not understand the concept of consent. Just feels obligated to perform.
Implications/ effects in later life?
What about cases where child has no knowledge of their ‘part’? For example, if their picture is taken when naked, is this still wrong?
They have given no consent. You cannot go around taken pictures of naked adults freely, so why children?
What about artist’s exhibition of pictures of naked children? They do not have an opportunity to agree or disagree so it is not fair.

• Homosexuality

Should homosexuality have the same restrictions as heterosexual?
Is it offensive? “I don’t mind it, just not in my face argument.”
Homosexuals may be offended by heterosexuals.
Any kind of affection, between anyone, can be offensive. Should be a case of no-one should be overly affectionate in public.
Lesbians vs. Gays – why is there a difference? Male fantasy of two women, yet repulsion of two men. Irrational to think in this way?
You cannot force religions to accept homosexuality. It is their belief.
Should homosexuality be included in sex education in schools?
Important to teach about protection for everyone, not just the majority.
Confused teens would feel even more excluded from society if their feelings were never acknowledged.

• Sex Education in Schools

Do we need better education in British schools? Would it help?
Is it down to poor education or lack of morals?
Education should focus upon consequences of sex, its up to parents and society to teach about moral decision making.

• Other Morally Wrong Acts

Bestiality
Necrophilia
Sex without consent (rape)
