April 2005
We reminded ourselves of what it was like to make a judgment on a practical question of morality by formulating arguments for and against the positions presented in the questionnaire on the ethics of sex practices - the libertinometer.
What conception of ethics were we appealing to in making these practical judgements? One possibility: to say such and such is immoral is simply to express the emotion of disapproval we feel when we consider it.
Another: to say x is moral is to say x makes for harm. This left the question of what we meant by 'harm'.
Another: moral rules are necessary to stop a community fragmenting.
VP, faut de mieux.
